Rooted Like a Tree
“Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, or set foot on the path of sinners, or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the Law of the LORD, and on His law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, yielding its fruit in season, whose leaf does not wither, and who prospers in all he does.”
The first psalm paints a picture of a person planted by streams of water, bearing fruit in season, with leaves that do not wither. The secret is not effort but location: this person delights in God's instruction and keeps returning to it. Trees do not strain to grow; they stay connected to the source. In a culture that celebrates hustle, this image is refreshing. Fruit comes in its season, which means some seasons look quiet and unproductive, and that is normal. Notice too that the psalm begins with what this person avoids, the counsel and company that pull the heart away. Today, choose a small daily habit that keeps you near the water, such as five minutes of reading Scripture before opening your phone. Do it consistently, and trust that fruit will come in its time.
Prayer
Lord, plant me by your living water and keep me rooted in your word.
