Green in a Dry Year

“But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in Him. He is like a tree planted by the waters that sends out its roots toward the stream. It does not fear when the heat comes, and its leaves are always green. It does not worry in a year of drought, nor does it cease to produce fruit.”
Jeremiah 17:7-8 (BSB)Read the whole chapter →

Jeremiah describes the person who trusts in the Lord as a tree by the water whose roots reach the stream. When heat comes, it does not fear; when drought arrives, it keeps producing fruit. The tree does not avoid the heat. Summer still comes, and so do hard years. What differs is the hidden root system. Our resilience in hard seasons is formed long before the hard season arrives, in quiet habits of trust that no one sees. That is encouraging if you are in a dry stretch now: roots grow deepest when the surface is dry. Today, reflect on where your roots actually go when stress hits, to distraction, to worry, or to God. Take one deliberate action to send them toward him: pray aloud, call a praying friend, or reread a passage that has held you before.

Prayer

Father, send my roots deep into you so I stay green when the heat comes.
