Salt and Light

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its savor, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they set it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
Matthew 5:13-16 (BSB)Read the whole chapter →

Jesus does not tell his followers to become salt and light; he says they already are. Salt preserves and flavors, working quietly, mostly unnoticed until it is missing. Light shows the way and cannot be hidden on a hill. Both images point outward: faith is not meant to sit in a private corner but to make ordinary life better for others. Notice the purpose stated at the end: that people see your good works and glorify God. The goal is not personal recognition. Today, look for a simple way to add flavor or light where you are. Maybe you will encourage a discouraged coworker, do a task no one expected you to do, or bring calm into a tense conversation. Let your actions do more talking than your words, and trust that small, steady goodness carries farther than you know.

Prayer

Lord, make me salt and light today, in ways that quietly point others to you.
