A New Heart
“For I will take you from among the nations and gather you out of all the countries, and I will bring you back into your own land. I will also sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean. I will cleanse you from all your impurities and all your idols. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will remove your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes and to carefully observe My ordinances. Then you will live in the land that I gave your forefathers; you will be My people, and I will be your God.”
God speaks to a scattered, discouraged people through Ezekiel, and his promise is remarkably personal. He will gather them, cleanse them, and then do something deeper: replace a heart of stone with a heart of flesh and put his own Spirit within them, so they will actually want to live his way. Notice that the change begins with God, not with more effort from them. Self-improvement can trim behavior, but it cannot give us new desires. Christians across traditions read this as a picture of what the Spirit does, softening what has grown hard and making obedience feel like belonging rather than burden. If your heart feels numb or hardened lately, that is not the end of the story. Today, simply ask God to soften you where you have grown cold, and then watch for small openings: a moment of compassion, a willingness to say sorry, a renewed hunger to pray.
Prayer
Spirit of God, soften my heart and give me new desires. I want to belong to You. Amen.
