Pressing On
“But whatever was gain to me I count as loss for the sake of Christ. More than that, I count all things as loss compared to the surpassing excellence of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God on the basis of faith. I want to know Christ and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to Him in His death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize of God’s heavenly calling in Christ Jesus.”
Paul had an impressive résumé, and he says he now counts all of it as loss compared with knowing Christ. That is not because his heritage was worthless, but because something infinitely better had come. His goal is not to look righteous but to know Jesus, to share in his suffering and to experience the power of his resurrection. What stands out is his humility: he does not claim to have arrived. Instead, forgetting what lies behind and straining toward what lies ahead, he presses on. Both halves matter. Letting go of past failures and past achievements alike frees us to move forward. Many of us are held back by either shame or pride about yesterday. Today, choose one thing from your past, a mistake or an accomplishment, that you have been clinging to, and consciously release it. Then take one small step toward knowing Christ better: read a Gospel passage slowly, or call someone who encourages your faith.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I want to know You more than anything else. Help me let go and press on. Amen.
