Help From Above

“I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth. He will not allow your foot to slip; your Protector will not slumber. Behold, the Protector of Israel will neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD is your keeper; the LORD is the shade on your right hand. The sun will not strike you by day, nor the moon by night. The LORD will guard you from all evil; He will preserve your soul. The LORD will watch over your coming and going, both now and forevermore.”

The traveler in this psalm lifts his eyes toward the hills, perhaps the road up to Jerusalem, and asks the honest question every pilgrim asks: where will my help come from? The answer is not the scenery, the road or his own stamina. It is the Maker of heaven and earth, who is described as a keeper who never slumbers. Notice how personal the language becomes: the Lord watches over your coming and your going, in daylight and at night. That does not promise a life without danger; it promises a Presence that never leaves the post. As a new month begins, you may be facing a road you cannot see the end of. Today, write down one thing that worries you about the coming weeks, then say aloud that God is its keeper, and place it in his hands before you move on.

Prayer

Lord, you never sleep and you never leave. Keep me on this road and teach me to look to you first.
