Loyal Love
“But Ruth replied: “Do not urge me to leave you or to turn from following you. For wherever you go, I will go, and wherever you live, I will live; your people will be my people, and your God will be my God. Where you die, I will die, and there I will be buried. May the LORD punish me, and ever so severely, if anything but death separates you and me.” When Naomi saw that Ruth was determined to go with her, she stopped trying to persuade her.”
Ruth had every reason to go home. She was a widow, a foreigner in the story, and the older woman she loved had nothing to offer her except a bitter road back to Bethlehem. Yet she chose to stay, and her words to Naomi are one of the great vows of loyalty in Scripture: your people will be my people, and your God my God. What makes this beautiful is that it is not a feeling but a decision, made when feelings were exhausted. Ruth's faithfulness will later place her in the family line of King David and of Jesus. Loyalty in ordinary life rarely looks heroic; it looks like showing up. Today, think of someone who is going through a hard season. Send them a message, make a call or bring a meal, and let them know you are not going anywhere.
Prayer
Father, make me faithful in small, quiet ways. Show me who needs me to stay beside them today.
