Engraved on His Hands

“But Zion said, “The LORD has forsaken me; the Lord has forgotten me!” “Can a woman forget her nursing child, or lack compassion for the son of her womb? Even if she could forget, I will not forget you! Behold, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands; your walls are ever before Me.”
Isaiah 49:14-16 (BSB)Read the whole chapter →

Zion felt abandoned, and she said so aloud: the Lord has forgotten me. God's answer is one of the most tender in the prophets. Could a nursing mother forget the child at her breast? Even if she could, he says, I will not forget you. Then he adds an image that still startles: your name is engraved on the palms of his hands. This is not a distant deity keeping records; it is a Father who has written you into his own body. For Christians, those hands later bear the marks of the cross, which gives the picture deeper meaning. Feelings of being forgotten are real, but they are not the final word. Today, when a lonely or forgotten feeling arrives, answer it with this truth. Reach out to one person too, because God often shows his remembering through people.

Prayer

God, when I feel forgotten, remind me that my name is in your hands. Let me remember someone else today.
