Sitting at His Feet
“As they traveled along, Jesus entered a village where a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home. She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to His message. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations to be made. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her to help me!” “Martha, Martha,” the Lord replied, “you are worried and upset about many things. But only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, and it will not be taken away from her.””
Martha opened her home to Jesus and then got lost in the work of hosting. Mary sat at his feet and listened. When Martha complained, Jesus did not scold her work; he gently named what was pulling at her heart. She was worried and troubled about many things, while only one thing was truly needed. In a culture where women rarely sat as disciples, he affirmed Mary's place among his students. This is not an argument that service is unimportant, since the same Gospel praises generous action. It is a reminder of the order: listening feeds serving, and serving without listening can turn resentful. Today, before your first task, give Jesus a few unhurried minutes. Put the phone down, sit somewhere quiet, and simply listen. Notice whether the day feels different afterward.
Prayer
Jesus, help me choose the one needed thing. Quiet my hurry so I can hear you.
