Three Times a Day, Thankful
“Now when Daniel learned that the document had been signed, he went into his house, where the windows of his upper room opened toward Jerusalem, and three times a day he got down on his knees, prayed, and gave thanks to his God, just as he had done before. Then these men went as a group and found Daniel petitioning and imploring his God. So they approached the king and asked about his royal decree: “Did you not sign a decree that for thirty days any man who petitions any god or man except you, O king, will be thrown into the den of lions?” The king replied, “According to the law of the Medes and Persians the order stands, and it cannot be repealed.” Then they told the king, “Daniel, one of the exiles from Judah, shows no regard for you, O king, or for the decree that you have signed. He still makes his petition three times a day.””
Daniel knew that a new law made prayer to anyone but the king a crime, and he went home and prayed just as he always had. The text notes that he did so three times a day, kneeling at an open window, giving thanks to his God. He did not turn it into a protest; he simply kept his habit. What stands out is that thanksgiving was part of his ordinary rhythm long before pressure arrived. When trouble came, he did not have to invent a new spiritual life; he already had one. Habits of gratitude prepare us for hard days. Today, set three short moments, morning, midday and evening, to stop for thirty seconds and thank God for something specific. Set phone reminders if that helps. Let these small pauses become a steady window through which your heart looks toward God, whatever the day brings.
Prayer
God, make thanksgiving the steady rhythm of my days, in easy times and hard ones. Amen.
