Every Good Gift

“Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, with whom there is no change or shifting shadow. He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we would be a kind of firstfruits of His creation.”
James 1:16-18 (BSB)Read the whole chapter →

James makes a bold statement about where good things come from: every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights. Unlike the sun and moon, which shift and cast shadows, He does not change. That means we can trace our blessings to a source that is constant and generous. It also protects us from a quiet mistake, blaming God for the bad and crediting ourselves for the good. James adds that God chose to give us new life through the word of truth, making us a kind of firstfruits of His creation. Even our faith is a gift. Today, take a short walk or a quiet pause and notice five good things around you: something you see, hear, taste or feel. Trace each one back to the Giver and thank Him by name, and let your ordinary day become a small act of worship.

Prayer

Father of lights, thank You for every good gift, seen and unseen. Help me recognize Your hand in my ordinary day. Amen.
