Keep Watch

“No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on your guard and stay alert! For you do not know when the appointed time will come. It is like a man going on a journey who left his house, put each servant in charge of his own task, and instructed the doorkeeper to keep watch. Therefore keep watch, because you do not know when the master of the house will return—whether in the evening, at midnight, when the rooster crows, or in the morning. Otherwise, he may arrive without notice and find you sleeping. And what I say to you, I say to everyone: Keep watch!””

Jesus tells His followers that no one knows the day or hour of His return, not even the angels. Instead of giving a schedule, He gives a posture: be alert, stay awake, and keep doing the work assigned to you. He compares this to a household whose master is traveling and who leaves each servant with a task. Watching, in this passage, is not anxious speculation but faithful readiness. As Advent begins, this is a good invitation to slow down and pay attention to how you are living. Are you distracted by what is urgent and missing what is important? Today, choose one task or relationship that God has entrusted to you and give it your full, unhurried attention. Then set aside five minutes tonight to be still, asking Christ to keep your heart awake and expectant in the days ahead.

Prayer

Christ, keep my heart awake and expectant. Help me be faithful in the work You have given me. Amen.
