Consider Your Ways

“Then the word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet, saying: “Is it a time for you yourselves to live in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?” Now this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Consider carefully your ways. You have planted much but harvested little. You eat but never have enough. You drink but never have your fill. You put on clothes but never get warm. You earn wages to put into a bag pierced through.” This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Consider carefully your ways. Go up into the hills, bring down lumber, and build the house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be glorified, says the LORD.”

The people had returned from exile and were busy building their own homes while God's house lay unfinished. Haggai holds up a mirror: you work hard, but nothing seems to satisfy; your earnings vanish like water through a leaking bag. He does not shame them so much as ask them to think, to consider their ways. Then he points them toward a simple next step: go up to the hills, bring wood and rebuild. The prophet suggests that misplaced priorities are often the hidden reason for a life that feels busy but empty. Today, take five quiet minutes and ask yourself honestly where you have been pouring most of your energy and whether God has a place in it. Then pick one concrete act to put Him first, such as praying before checking your phone, or setting aside a fixed time this week for worship or service.

Prayer

Lord, help me see where my priorities have drifted. Make You my first and best. Amen.
