Wisdom in the Waiting
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers, when you encounter trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Allow perseverance to finish its work, so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.”
James begins with something startling: consider trials pure joy. He does not mean pretend to enjoy pain. He means that testing can produce endurance, and endurance can shape a person who lacks nothing essential. Then he adds a kind invitation: if you lack wisdom, ask God, who gives generously without scolding. Many of us hesitate to ask because we feel we should already know. James says God is not irritated by the question. Today, name one situation in which you do not know what to do, a decision at work, a family tension, a delay. Ask God plainly for wisdom about it. Then be attentive: wisdom often comes through Scripture, good counsel and small nudges rather than lightning. Write down what you notice and act on the next clear step.
Prayer
God, I lack wisdom. Give it generously, and help me be patient while I wait. Amen.
