The Joy of the Lord

“Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who were instructing the people said to all of them, “This day is holy to the LORD your God. Do not mourn or weep.” For all the people were weeping as they heard the words of the Law. Then Nehemiah told them, “Go and eat what is rich, drink what is sweet, and send out portions to those who have nothing prepared, since today is holy to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.””

When the law was read to the returned exiles, they wept, perhaps grieving how far they had drifted. Nehemiah and the leaders told them not to mourn on that day, but to eat, drink, share with those who had nothing and celebrate, because the joy of the Lord was their strength. Notice that repentance and joy are not opposites. Recognizing where we have fallen short is meant to lead to gladness in a God who welcomes us back, not to endless self-punishment. Also notice the sharing: joy that reaches those who have nothing. Today, let yourself enjoy something simple as a gift from God, a meal, music, a walk. Then send a portion of that gladness to someone, an encouraging message or a small gift. Strength grows where joy is passed along.

Prayer

Lord, let Your joy be my strength, and let me pass it on to someone today. Amen.
