Love in Action
“Love must be sincere. Detest what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Outdo yourselves in honoring one another. Do not let your zeal subside; keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, persistent in prayer. Share with the saints who are in need. Practice hospitality.”
Paul gives a list that is practical and warm: love sincerely, honor one another, stay zealous, be patient in trouble, be devoted in prayer, share with those in need, practice hospitality. Nothing here is abstract. Love, for Paul, is a set of habits. It notices who is in need and moves toward them. It refuses to be a performance. It also holds together things that seem opposed: hating evil while clinging to what is good, being joyful in hope while patient in affliction. Today, choose one line from that list and let it shape a specific action. Perhaps invite someone to your table, or send help to a person who is struggling, or set a daily prayer for someone difficult. Ordinary love, repeated, changes a community more than any single dramatic gesture.
Prayer
God of love, make my love sincere and my hands ready to help. Amen.
