God Sings Over You
“Sing for joy, O Daughter of Zion; shout aloud, O Israel! Be glad and rejoice with all your heart, O Daughter of Jerusalem! The LORD has taken away your punishment; He has turned back your enemy. Israel’s King, the LORD, is among you; no longer will you fear any harm. On that day they will say to Jerusalem: “Do not fear, O Zion; do not let your hands fall limp. The LORD your God is among you; He is mighty to save. He will rejoice over you with gladness; He will quiet you with His love; He will rejoice over you with singing.””
Zephaniah ends a hard book with a surprise. After warnings of judgment, he invites the people to sing and rejoice, because the Lord is in their midst. The most tender image comes near the end: God delights in His people, quiets them with His love and rejoices over them with singing. We usually think of ourselves singing to God, not the other way around. Yet this portrait says His attitude toward His people is gladness, not grudging tolerance. If you struggle to believe God is pleased with you, this passage is a gentle correction. Today, sit for a few minutes and imagine that verse as spoken directly to you. Then thank Him aloud. Let that assurance shape how you speak to yourself and treat others today.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for delighting in me. Help me believe it and live in Your love. Amen.
