El día primero del mes séptimo todo el pueblo se reunió en la plaza que está frente a la puerta de las Aguas, para pedirle a Esdras, el jefe religioso, que leyera la ley que Dios les había dado por medio de Moisés. El sacerdote Esdras sacó el rollo de las leyes de Moisés. Se paró sobre un estrado de madera hecho especialmente para la ocasión, de modo que todos pudieran verlo mientras leía. Estaba ante la plaza que queda frente a la puerta de las Aguas, y leyó desde que amaneció hasta el mediodía. Todos se pusieron de pie cuando él abrió el rollo.
