Anxiety is more than a passing worry; it can sit in the body and follow you into the night. Scripture does not scold anxious people. It keeps inviting them closer to a God who is attentive, patient and near. The passages below offer company and a place to set your burdens down, one prayer at a time. They are not a replacement for care: if anxiety is heavy or constant, please talk with a doctor, a counselor or a pastor you trust. Seeking help is a wise and faithful step.
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Paul turns worry into conversation with God, pairing requests with thankfulness. The promise is a peace that stands guard over the heart and mind, even before circumstances change.
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air: They do not sow or reap or gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?”
Jesus points to birds and to the plain fact that worry cannot add an hour to life. He is not dismissing real needs but showing that a Father who feeds sparrows notices yours.
“When anxiety overwhelms me, Your consolation delights my soul.”
The psalmist admits his mind was full of anxious thoughts, and says God's comfort brought him back to joy. Honest naming of the struggle is part of the way through.
“Cast your burden upon the LORD and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous be shaken.”
An invitation to place your load on the Lord, with the assurance that he will keep the faithful from being toppled. You are not asked to carry it alone.
“I sought the LORD, and He answered me; He delivered me from all my fears.”
David remembers seeking the Lord in his distress and being freed from what he feared. It shows a simple pattern: look for God, and let him answer in his time.
“You will keep in perfect peace the steadfast of mind, because he trusts in You.”
Peace is described as a gift for the mind that keeps leaning on God. It grows through returning again and again, not through forcing yourself to feel calm.
“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled; do not be afraid.”
On the eve of his arrest, Jesus leaves his own peace with his friends, unlike anything the world hands out. He also tells them not to let their hearts be shaken or afraid.
“Anxiety weighs down the heart of a man, but a good word cheers it up.”
A proverb that understands how anxiety weighs on a person and how much a kind word can lift. It is a nudge to speak gently to others and to let others speak that way to you.
“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my concerns. See if there is any offensive way in me; lead me in the way everlasting.”
The psalmist asks God to search his heart and test his anxious thoughts, then lead him on the lasting path. It is a prayer for gentle examination, not for condemnation.
“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.””
Jesus speaks to the weary and burdened and offers rest, describing himself as gentle and humble. His way is a lighter yoke shared with him.
“Because of the loving devotion of the LORD we are not consumed, for His mercies never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness!”
Written in the middle of grief, these lines point to a faithfulness that does not run out and a mercy that arrives fresh each morning. Tomorrow's worries meet a God who is already there.
A short prayer
Lord, you see what is weighing on me tonight. I place it in your hands, and I ask for your peace and for the wisdom to seek help when I need it. Amen.
