Bible Verses About Forgiveness

Forgiveness sits at the heart of the Christian story: God forgives us, and we are asked to forgive one another. Both directions are hard. Some of us carry guilt we cannot shake, and some carry wounds that others caused. These passages describe a God who is slow to anger and generous with mercy, and they treat forgiving others as a path toward freedom, not as pretending nothing happened. Take your time; healing rarely happens quickly.

God forgives us

“The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in loving devotion. He will not always accuse us, nor harbor His anger forever. He has not dealt with us according to our sins or repaid us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is His loving devotion for those who fear Him. As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.”

David celebrates a God who is patient and rich in mercy, who does not deal with us as our failures deserve. He pictures our sins carried as far away as east is from west.

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Honest confession is met with a faithful and just God who forgives and cleanses. The invitation is to stop hiding and bring the truth into the light.

““Come now, let us reason together,” says the LORD. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they will be as white as snow; though they are as red as crimson, they will become like wool.”

God invites his people to reason together and promises that even deep stains can become clean. It is an open door, not a demand for perfection first.

“Who is a God like You, who pardons iniquity and passes over the transgression of the remnant of His inheritance— who does not retain His anger forever, because He delights in loving devotion? He will again have compassion on us; He will vanquish our iniquities. You will cast out all our sins into the depths of the sea.”

The prophet marvels that God delights in mercy rather than anger and casts our sins into the depths of the sea. Forgiveness flows from his character.

Forgiving others

“For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive yours.”

Right after teaching the Lord's Prayer, Jesus ties our willingness to forgive others to how we live in the Father's forgiveness. It is a sobering reminder that mercy received should shape mercy given.

“Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, outcry and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and tenderhearted to one another, forgiving each other just as in Christ God forgave you.”

Paul calls believers to put away bitterness and anger and to be kind and tenderhearted toward one another. The pattern is the way God in Christ has already forgiven us.

“Bear with one another and forgive any complaint you may have against someone else. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”

Bearing with one another and forgiving grievances is described as the natural response to being forgiven by the Lord. It acknowledges that offenses are real and still chooses grace.

“Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.”

Jesus warns against harsh judgment and condemnation and encourages releasing others from them. Letting go is tied to receiving the same mercy yourself.

“Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother who sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, not just seven times, but seventy-seven times!”

When Peter asks how many times to forgive, Jesus answers with a number so large that counting becomes pointless. Forgiveness is meant to become a habit of the heart.

Restored and free

“So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still in the distance, his father saw him and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him. The son declared, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. ’ But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let us feast and celebrate. For this son of mine was dead and is alive again! He was lost and is found!’ So they began to celebrate.”

A father runs to embrace his returning son before any apology is finished, then throws a celebration. It is Jesus' picture of how God receives people who come home.

“Blessed is he whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man whose iniquity the LORD does not count against him, in whose spirit there is no deceit. When I kept silent, my bones became brittle from my groaning all day long. For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was drained as in the summer heat.Selah Then I acknowledged my sin to You and did not hide my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,” and You forgave the guilt of my sin.Selah”

David describes the weight of hidden guilt and the relief that came when he finally confessed. Forgiveness turns silence and strain into gladness.

“Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

Paul announces that there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus. It answers the voice that keeps replaying old failures.

“Repent, then, and turn back, so that your sins may be wiped away,”

Peter urges his listeners to turn back to God so that their sins may be wiped away and times of refreshing may come. Repentance is a way into renewal, not only regret.

A short prayer

Father, thank you for forgiving me. Help me to accept your mercy, and give me the grace to release those who have hurt me. Amen.
