Bible Verses About God's Faithfulness

People let us down, circumstances shift, and even our own promises wear thin. The Bible keeps returning to one steady fact: God keeps his word. He kept it with Abraham, with Israel in the desert, and with a weary prophet who thought all was lost, and he keeps it in Christ. These passages are a record of a faithful God and an invitation to lean on him when you cannot see the way. Read them on days when you need proof that he has not changed.

A God who keeps his word

“Know therefore that the LORD your God is God, the faithful God who keeps His covenant of loving devotion for a thousand generations of those who love Him and keep His commandments.”

Moses tells Israel that the Lord is the faithful God who keeps his covenant across a thousand generations with those who love him. His loyalty outlasts any lifetime.

“God is not a man, that He should lie, or a son of man, that He should change His mind. Does He speak and not act? Does He promise and not fulfill?”

Unlike a human being, God does not lie or change his mind about what he has spoken. What he promises, he does.

“Not one of all the LORD’s good promises to the house of Israel had failed; everything was fulfilled.”

Looking back on the conquest, the writer says not one of the good promises failed. Hindsight can be a strong argument for trust.

“I will sing of the loving devotion of the LORD forever; with my mouth I will proclaim Your faithfulness to all generations. For I have said, “Loving devotion is built up forever; in the heavens You establish Your faithfulness.””

The psalmist vows to sing of the Lord's steadfast love and to proclaim his faithfulness to every generation. Faithfulness is worth telling out loud, especially to the young.

“For all the promises of God are “Yes” in Christ. And so through Him, our “Amen” is spoken to the glory of God.”

Paul says every promise of God finds its yes in Christ. Christians see Jesus as the place where God's faithfulness is made visible.

Faithful in hard seasons

“Yet I call this to mind, and therefore I have hope: Because of the loving devotion of the LORD we are not consumed, for His mercies never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness!”

Out of deep grief, the writer chooses to recall that the Lord's mercies do not run out and are new every morning. Faithfulness is remembered on purpose when feelings say otherwise.

“Though the fig tree does not bud and no fruit is on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though the sheep are cut off from the fold and no cattle are in the stalls, yet I will exult in the LORD; I will rejoice in the God of my salvation! GOD the Lord is my strength; He makes my feet like those of a deer; He makes me walk upon the heights! For the choirmaster. With stringed instruments.”

Even with empty fields and no harvest in sight, the prophet decides to rejoice in the Lord. Faith here does not depend on what the circumstances deliver.

“No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide an escape, so that you can stand up under it.”

God is faithful and will not let testing go beyond what you can bear, and he provides a way through. The promise is not that trials never come, but that you are never left without help.

“if we are faithless, He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself.”

Even when we are unfaithful, Christ remains faithful because he cannot deny himself. Our failures do not cancel his character.

“Though the mountains may be removed and the hills may be shaken, My loving devotion will not depart from you, and My covenant of peace will not be broken,” says the LORD, who has compassion on you.”

Mountains may move, yet God's love and covenant of peace will not. He compares his steadiness to the most solid things we know and says it is greater.

Held to the end

“Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely, and may your entire spirit, soul, and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The One who calls you is faithful, and He will do it.”

Paul prays that God will keep the believers whole until Christ returns and adds that the one who calls them is faithful and will do it. The work depends on him.

“Let us hold resolutely to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful.”

Believers are urged to hold on to their hope without wavering, because the one who promised is faithful. Our grip is steadied by his.

“being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Paul is sure that God, who began a good work in the Philippians, will bring it to completion. It is a comfort for anyone who feels unfinished.

“Your loving devotion, O LORD, reaches to the heavens, Your faithfulness to the clouds. Your righteousness is like the highest mountains; Your judgments are like the deepest sea. O LORD, You preserve man and beast.”

The psalmist measures God's love and faithfulness against the heavens and the clouds, and his righteousness against the mountains. Language stretches to say how large it is.

A short prayer

Faithful God, you have kept your word to every generation. When I cannot see how things will turn out, help me to remember what you have already done and to rest in who you are.
