Pressing Toward the Goal

“But whatever was gain to me I count as loss for the sake of Christ. More than that, I count all things as loss compared to the surpassing excellence of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God on the basis of faith. I want to know Christ and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to Him in His death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize of God’s heavenly calling in Christ Jesus.”

Paul had an impressive record, and he counted it all as loss compared with knowing Christ. What he wanted most was to know him, the power of his resurrection, and even the fellowship of his sufferings. Then he admits something humble: I have not arrived. He forgets what is behind and stretches toward what is ahead. Growth in faith is like that, a lifelong reach rather than a finished product. Comparing ourselves to others can wear us out, but pressing on toward Christ gives energy. Today, let go of one thing behind you, an old regret or an old victory that has made you complacent. Then choose one way to stretch: read a chapter you have been avoiding, pray for someone you find hard, or start a small habit that brings you closer to Jesus.

Prayer

Christ, I want to know You more. Help me press on with joy. Amen.
