Peace That Guards
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Paul wrote this letter from a prison cell, and he tells the church not to be anxious about anything. Then he gives a pattern rather than a slogan: in every situation, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. The result is a peace that surpasses understanding and stands guard over hearts and minds like a sentry. Notice that peace is the guard, not the feeling we manufacture. Notice also that gratitude is included. Thanks turns our attention from what is missing to what God has already done. This is not a call to feel guilty for anxiety. Anxiety is real, and sometimes it needs professional care as well as prayer. Today, take a piece of paper, write down the three things that worry you most, and beside each write one line of prayer. Then add three things you are thankful for right now.
Prayer
Lord, I bring You my worries with thanks. Guard my heart and mind with Your peace. Amen.
