Called to Go

“Then the LORD said to Abram, “Leave your country, your kindred, and your father’s household, and go to the land I will show you. I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you; and all the families of the earth will be blessed through you. ” So Abram departed, as the LORD had directed him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran.”

God spoke to Abram, an older man living comfortably with his family, and told him to leave his country and his father's house for a land that God would show him. There was no map, only a promise: I will make you a great nation, and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you. Abram went. The text is spare about his feelings, but the leaving must have cost him. Faith in the Bible is often just this, a step taken toward a voice before the whole route is visible. The promise was bigger than Abram alone; it reached the nations, and Christians see its fulfillment in Christ. God still calls people out of the familiar, sometimes across a country and sometimes only across a comfort zone. Today, ask God where He may be inviting you to step out, perhaps to serve, to forgive, or to begin. Write it down.

Prayer

God, You call me by name. Give me courage to leave what is familiar and follow You. Amen.
