Clothed With Love
“Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with hearts of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Bear with one another and forgive any complaint you may have against someone else. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which is the bond of perfect unity.”
Paul talks about the Christian life as a change of clothes. Since we are chosen, holy and loved by God, we get dressed accordingly: compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. It is a striking list, because each item is practiced with other people, often people we find tiring. He adds two hard instructions: bear with one another and forgive as the Lord forgave you. Then comes the garment that holds everything together, which is love. Notice that the identity comes first. We do not wear these things to earn God's favor; we wear them because we already have it. Today, pick one person who tests your patience and decide beforehand which garment you will put on with them, whether patience, kindness or forgiveness. When the moment comes, remember that you are dressing for who you already are in Christ.
Prayer
Lord, clothe me with your compassion and patience. Help me forgive as you have forgiven me.
