Family is where most of us first learn what love, forgiveness and conflict look like. The Bible takes family seriously, from the first household in Genesis to the church described as God's own family, and it is honest about how hard families can be. These passages speak about God's design for home, honoring parents, living gently with one another and the wider family we find in Christ. Families look very different today, and many readers carry hurt from their own. If that is you, take these words slowly, and consider talking with a pastor or counselor.
“A father of the fatherless and a defender of widows is God in His holy habitation. God settles the lonely in families; He leads the prisoners out to prosperity, but the rebellious dwell in a sun-scorched land.”
God is called father to the fatherless and is said to place the lonely in families. His care reaches those whose own families fell short or are gone.
“Honor your father and mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.”
Honoring father and mother is one of the Ten Commandments, and it comes with a promise. It asks for respect in every stage of life, not only childhood.
“Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother” (which is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life on the earth.” Fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath; instead, bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.”
Children are told to obey their parents in the Lord, and fathers are told not to exasperate their children but to raise them with care. Authority in the home comes with gentleness.
“If anyone does not provide for his own, and especially his own household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.”
Paul says that providing for one's relatives, especially one's own household, is part of living out the faith. Love for family shows up in practical care.
“Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with hearts of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Bear with one another and forgive any complaint you may have against someone else. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which is the bond of perfect unity.”
Paul lists compassion, kindness, humility, patience and forgiveness, all tied together by love. These are the habits that hold a household together.
“Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, outcry and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and tenderhearted to one another, forgiving each other just as in Christ God forgave you.”
Bitterness and harsh words are to be put away in favor of kindness and forgiveness. Home is often where this is hardest and most needed.
“But if it is unpleasing in your sight to serve the LORD, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living. As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD!””
Joshua declares that he and his household will serve the Lord. Faith is lived out in a home as a shared and deliberate commitment.
“But Jesus replied, “Who are My mother and My brothers?” Looking at those seated in a circle around Him, He said, “Here are My mother and My brothers! For whoever does the will of God is My brother and sister and mother.””
Jesus points to those who do God's will and calls them his brother, sister and mother. He does not dismiss blood family, but he widens the circle.
“So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still in the distance, his father saw him and was filled with compassion. He ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.”
In the story of the lost son, the father sees him far off and runs to meet him with compassion. It pictures both a good parent and the way God welcomes us.
A short prayer
Father, bless my family and heal what is broken between us. Teach us to speak gently, forgive quickly and love as you love us. Amen.
