Prophecy

What God promised, and how he keeps his word

The prophets spoke to their own generation and looked far beyond it. Here we read them carefully: the promises fulfilled in Jesus, how prophecy actually works, Daniel and Revelation without the hype, and the hope every Christian shares — that he will come again.

Prophecies fulfilled in Jesus

Eight promises from the Old Testament, and where the New Testament sees them come true. Tap a reference to read it.

  1. Prediction

    A ruler from little Bethlehem

Micah named the smallest of Judah's towns as the birthplace of Israel's coming ruler. The scribes in Herod's court knew the answer by heart.

    Promise
    Micah 5:2
  2. Prediction

A son of David with an endless throne

God promised David a descendant whose kingdom would never end. Gabriel's message to Mary picks up that promise almost word for word.

  3. Pattern

    God with us

A sign first given to King Ahaz in a crisis. Matthew hears in it something far larger: in Jesus, God himself has come to be with his people.

  4. Prediction

A humble king on a donkey

Zechariah pictured Jerusalem's king arriving gentle and lowly. Jesus chose that picture on purpose when he rode into the city before Passover.

  5. Prediction

The servant who carried our wounds

Isaiah's suffering servant is punished for the sins of others and brings them peace. The apostles read this song as the clearest map of the cross.

    Fulfilled
    1 Peter 2:24
  6. Pattern

The psalm prayed from the cross

David's cry of abandonment, down to the gambling for clothes, becomes Jesus' own prayer at Golgotha. The psalm ends in praise, and so does the story.

  7. Prediction

    Not abandoned to the grave

At Pentecost Peter pointed out that David's tomb was still occupied. The one who would not see decay, he argued, had to be someone else.

  8. Prediction

A new covenant written on the heart

Jeremiah promised a covenant of forgiven sins and changed hearts. At the Last Supper Jesus lifted the cup and said that covenant began with his blood.

    Fulfilled
    Luke 22:20

“Prediction” marks a promise that looked ahead; “pattern” marks an event the apostles saw echoed and completed in Christ.
