Even John the Baptist Doubted: What Jesus Did With a Prisoner's Question

The man who pointed at Jesus and named him God's Lamb later sat in a cell and sent friends to ask if he had it right. What Jesus said back is the kindest answer to doubt in the Gospels.

Talitha Koum: The Aramaic Words the Gospels Refused to Translate

The Gospels were written in Greek, but at a few unforgettable moments they keep the Aramaic Jesus actually spoke. Those words appear at a child's bedside, in a garden at night, on the cross and at an empty tomb, and they let us hear the sound of his voice.

Who was Jesus?

Jesus was a Jewish teacher from Nazareth who lived about two thousand years ago and was executed by the Romans, and historians of every background agree that he was a real person. Christians believe he is far more than a teacher: the Son of God, who came to show us what God is like and to rescue us.

What does Yeshua mean?

Yeshua is the Hebrew and Aramaic name that reaches English as Jesus. It is a shorter form of Yehoshua, the same name as Joshua, and it means roughly "the Lord saves." For Christians, the name is a one-word summary of why he came.

Did Jesus really exist?

Yes. The great majority of historians, Christian or not, agree that Jesus of Nazareth was a real person who was crucified under Pontius Pilate. Besides early Christian writings, a handful of Roman and Jewish authors from the first and early second centuries mention him, some of them openly hostile.

Is Jesus God?

Historic Christianity answers yes: Jesus is the eternal Son of God who became human, fully God and fully man, one with the Father yet distinct from him. His first followers worshiped him within a few decades of his death, although Jews, Muslims and some groups that use the name Christian see him differently.

Why did Jesus become human?

Christians believe God did not want to help us from a distance, so the Son of God entered our world as a real person. He came to show us what God is like, to stand with us in everything human, and to rescue us from sin and death from the inside.

Where was Jesus born?

Matthew and Luke both say Jesus was born in Bethlehem, a small town in Judea about six miles (ten kilometers) south of Jerusalem. He grew up far to the north in Nazareth, in Galilee, which is why people called him Jesus of Nazareth.

What did Jesus look like?

No one knows for certain, because the New Testament never describes his face or build. Historians and archaeologists suggest he looked like a typical first-century Jewish man from Galilee, with olive-brown skin, dark hair and dark eyes, not like the fair-skinned figure in many paintings.

Who were the 12 disciples of Jesus?

The twelve disciples were the inner circle Jesus chose to live beside him, learn from him and later carry his message. They were ordinary working people, among them fishermen, a tax collector and a man nicknamed the Zealot, and the Gospels are honest about their doubts and failures.

What were the miracles of Jesus?

The Gospels record Jesus healing the sick, driving out evil spirits, calming a storm, feeding crowds and raising the dead. Christians have historically read these as real events and as signs: pointers to who he is and to what God's kingdom looks like. They were never tricks for a crowd, but glimpses of a world made whole.

What are the parables of Jesus?

Parables are short stories Jesus drew from everyday life, like a lost sheep, a mustard seed or a son who squanders his inheritance, to show what God is like and how his kingdom works. About a third of his teaching in Matthew, Mark and Luke comes in this form, and the stories leave listeners to find themselves inside them. The best known include the Good Samaritan, the Prodigal Son and the Sower.

Why did Jesus die?

Historically, Jesus was crucified by the Romans under Pontius Pilate, after some Jewish leaders handed him over. Christians believe he also gave his life willingly, to forgive sins and to bring people back to God. Christians describe that in several ways, but they share one conviction: he died for us.

Did Jesus rise from the dead?

Christians believe that on the third day after his crucifixion, God raised Jesus to life in a real, transformed body, and that everything else in the faith rests on it. It cannot be proven like a lab result, but the evidence deserves a fair hearing: an empty tomb, testimony written down within a generation, and frightened followers who quickly became bold. Each person has to weigh it honestly and decide.

How can I know Jesus?

Christians believe you can know Jesus the way you come to know any person: by spending time with him, listening, and being honest. In practice that means reading what the Gospels say about him, talking to God in your own words, asking your questions out loud, and meeting others who follow him. There is no required starting level, and you are free to go at your own pace.

How do I pray to follow Jesus?

Praying to follow Jesus is simply talking to God honestly: telling him you want to trust Jesus and asking for his help. There are no magic words, and the wording matters far less than a sincere heart. If you are not ready, that is fine; you can keep asking questions and come back to this whenever you like.

What did Jesus say about prayer?

Jesus taught that prayer is talking with God as a loving Father, Abba in his own Aramaic, who already knows what you need. He asked for honesty over performance, told people to keep asking, and gave his followers a short model, the Lord's Prayer. He prayed often himself, sometimes alone before dawn.

Is Jesus coming back?

Yes. From the first generation, Christians have believed Jesus will return to set the world right and finish what he began, and the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds both say so. Because no one knows the day, he asked his followers to live ready and hopeful, not anxious; Christians differ on the details, not on the hope.

What did Jesus say about heaven?

Jesus spoke of heaven as the place where God is fully present, and he promised life with God to those who trust him. He pictured it as a home prepared with care and a joyful feast, and the Bible's last book adds a world with no more death or tears. He said very little about its details, and a great deal about the God who welcomes people there.

What is grace?

Grace is God's undeserved kindness: love and forgiveness given as a gift, not paid as a wage. Christians believe it is the heart of Jesus' message, since he came for people who could never make themselves good enough. You receive it by trusting him, not by proving yourself.

What does it mean that Jesus is the Son of God?

Christians call Jesus the Son of God because they believe he shares God's own nature and knows the Father as no one else does. It does not mean God had a wife or that Jesus was created; it is a way of describing a unique, eternal relationship of love. It also means that in Jesus we see what God is really like.

What did Jesus say about suffering?

Jesus never pretended that suffering is small or that it always has a neat explanation. He told people that pain is real, that God is close to those who hurt, and that he himself would share it. Why is Jesus called the Lamb of God?

John the Baptist gave Jesus the title when he pointed him out at the Jordan River, calling him the lamb God himself provides to take away the world's sin. What is the gospel?

Was Jesus born of a virgin?

Christians have always believed that Mary conceived Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit, without a human father. What did Jesus teach about love?

Jesus said the two greatest commands are to love God with your whole self and to love your neighbor as yourself. Can Jesus forgive anything?

Yes. Christians believe no wrong is too great for Jesus to forgive when a person turns to God and trusts him, because his death on the cross covers even the worst. The Gospels show him forgiving a paralyzed man, a woman the town called a sinner, a wealthy tax collector, a dying criminal and the friend who denied him; forgiveness may not erase every consequence, but it restores you to God.

What does it mean to follow Jesus?

How is Jesus different from other religious teachers?

Many religious teachers have pointed people toward wisdom, goodness or God, and Christians can honor what is true and good in them. What sets Jesus apart, in Christian belief, is that he did not only point the way but said he was the way: he forgave sins in his own name, offered grace as a gift rather than a reward, and, Christians believe, rose from the dead. Those claims are why people have never managed to file him away as one more wise man.
